Two weeks of working for myself

It’s now been two weeks since I quit my job and started off on my own. Although you might be expecting a list of lessons about self-employment that I’ve learned in two weeks, things just have not been that crazy.

To be perfectly honest, things aren’t really that different—that might be a bit of an understatement. What’s different is that I love what I do, I care about what I do, and I’m excited about what’s to come. Of course, I can’t say that I haven’t learned anything in the last two weeks—I’ve learned a bit about myself and the world around me.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far

  • I love the clients I’ve been working with.
  • I quite like not taking on clients who rub me the wrong way in the first 10 minutes of our meeting.
  • I don’t mind dropping a client who takes weeks to approve a contract (they’ll take just as long for each review and double the project duration).
  • I need to get used to working from home during the day. I’m still stuck in the working-at-home-means-working-in-the-middle-of-the-night pattern that I’ve ingrained over the past year. I’m slowly breaking that down.
  • Scarcity is a problem for economists. There’s an abundance of work out there and great people to do it with. You only have to see it that way.
  • What you do today affects what you do six months from now.
  • Quitting your job to do what you already love doing is great for fun and profit.

Another Milestone

I’ve decide to not take on any additional clients over the next three to four months while my friend and I pursue a business venture that, we hope, will rock an entire industry and flip the established practice on its ear. At the end of that time frame, I’ll evaluate whether or not to start taking on client work again. With a bit of luck, and a lot of hard work, I won’t have time to.

I’ll still be supporting my existing clients and working with clients who I’ve made long-term commitments to. This amounts to about a third or a half of my 50-60 hour work week (I round up and Fridays are optional). The remainder of my efforts will be dedicated to this new business venture.

Exciting times. I’ll keep ANDYMISM updated.
