On Failure

Tango Feet

Judo and tango are hard things to do. Learning technique and gaining skill in either judo or tango isn’t easy. Try something new and you will not get it right the first time. Or the fifth. Maybe by the sixth or seventh time, you’ll have the idea down. But you forgot to do this or that and you need to put some soul and expression into it. And how about the timing? Or the music? Or during sparring or on a crowded dance floor?

A spiritual endeavor

Most people are too afraid of failure to try learning something new. You always know what you’re getting when you stick with what you know: the same old thing.

If it’s really that easy, is it worth your time? Maybe you’re looking at it the wrong way.

It’s hard work to be good, which is often why I see people settle for much less. Why?

I live for challenges and learning. If I feel like I’m not getting that, it’s time to look elsewhere. Growth is important, which is why being willing to fail and to learn from failure is essential.

Learning something difficult is a spiritual endeavor. It’s simple, but not easy: Try your very best. Fail. Learn. Rinse, repeat.
